Journeyman Smoother

As you can see, this White Oak Smoother is shaped quite differently from my premium level planes. Through talking with many of you, I realized that there was definitely room for a lower priced option when it came to my wood planes. Of course, lower price does not in any way mean lower quality. I still strive to make these planes some of the most enjoyable you will ever use. The mouth opening is still tiny, the blade (2″ wide O1 steel) is still from Hock Tools, and it will absolutely still take gossamer thin shavings. The only differences are essentially aesthetic. On this version, I leave the band saw and rasp marks, the shape is more simple, and it’s just left with the essentials that make it work. No flash, glitz, or silky smooth lines here, and maybe for some, that’s exactly what you want. One added benefit of the rougher texture of the plane is that it is very grippy in your hands. If you are looking to just dip your toe into the wood plane waters, this is a great way to start, without breaking the bank. Or if you just feel like my premium level planes are too pretty to use (don’t worry, I can take it), then this is for you also.

Bed angle is 50º.
