A well tuned wood bodied smoothing plane just may be the most enjoyable tool to use. The wispy thin shavings that almost float out of the top of the plane as it glides across a piece of wood, leaving behind a glass-like surface, can literally fill a woodworker with joy. Whether the board was flattened by power tools or a combination of hand planes, the smoothing plane is the tool to use to leave a silky smooth surface that is ready for finishing, no sanding required.

The feedback that a wood bodied plane gives to the user is probably most noticeable on the smoother. The feel of the cut, the sound of it, and the visual quality of the shaving all combine to create a user experience like no other tool can give. My 9″ smoothing plane excels at this feedback. Its shape fits wonderfully in your hands, with no sharp corners to create discomfort. With a bed angle of 50º, my smoothing planes will handle just about any wood you throw at it. If you really want to laugh in the face of difficult grains, pick the 55º bed angle option.

The iron is a 2″ wide, high carbon O1 blade from Hock Tools. Ron makes some of the finest plane irons available today. These O1 blades can be honed to an extremely sharp edge quickly and have great retention.

The Premium Smoother is available in Osage Orange, White Oak, Tiger Maple, or Mesquite (in limited runs). The basic price has the wedge, crosspin, and sole as the same wood species as the body. Customize your smoother by adding a complimenting species for the wedge, crosspin, and sole. Available woods are Ebony, Asian Ebony (lower cost than true Ebony, has more browns and deep red tones), Mesquite, Bubinga, Teak, and Osage Orange.
